HAWAII — The Kīlauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island stopped erupting on Sunday after flowing for almost 10 hours. At its highest, the fountain of lava soared 1,300 feet in the air from the south vent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The plume of smoke reached an altitude of around 35,000 feet.
Peak fountain heights were at 1,300 ft. for the south vent and 1,000 ft. for the north vent, with the plume reaching 35,000 ft. Approximately 15 million cubic yards of lava covered about 50% of the Halema’uma’u crater floor.
Volunteers agreed to help remove tephra from the roofs, gutters, and water catchment systems of more than 60 homes, which is the number Civil Defense identified as needing immediate assistance. However, Team Rubicon was only able to clear 23 homes in the Volcano area.
